Captain retires after 32-year career Captain Patricia Quinn began her 32-year career in the Coast Guard as an active duty boatswain's mate. She operated 44-foot motor life boats, 41-foot utility boats, and nonstandard rigid-hulled inflatable boats. After four years, she transferred to the Reserve and was assigned to small boat stations, but received her commission in 1994. Quinn joined the Coast Guard after working as a deck hand on a small cruise ship, the New Shoreham II, out of Warren, R.I., the day after she graduated college. She said, "One day the ship ran out of fuel in Newport Harbor, and we had to be towed in by a little white boat with an orange and blue stripe on the bow. I thought that looked like the coolest job ever!" The Rhode Island native is currently employed as a boat captain for the Winnipesaukee Flagship Corporation in New Hampshire. She retired July 1 at a ceremony held with family and friends at Base Boston in April of 2019. "Throughout my career, I was inspired by a small handful of women that I truly admired and respected," said Quinn. "I can only hope I have been able to do the same for others." She added, "I have thoroughly enjoyed serving with some incredible Coasties in some amazing assignments. However, I could not have done it without the love and support of my family and friends." — Story and photos by Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandon Hillard Capt.
