TAPS Lt. Joshua L. Waldmeier, 43, passed away peacefully at his home in Oregon Jan. 11, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. He was born March 16, 1979, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. In 2003, he met his wife Lindy, and together they welcomed three children. He started his career in the Coast Guard in 2005, becoming a marine science technician. In 2014, he received his commission, pursuing a career in emergency management. He was most recently a member of the Pacific Strike Team, responding to the St. Simons Sound Incident with the Golden Ray. He loved to travel, camp, cruise in his ‘65 Mustang, cheer for LSU, drink Guinness, skateboard, rollerblade, go to concerts and surf. Lt. Waldmeier is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lindy, and their three young sons: Everett, Ethan, and Emerson. He also leaves behind his parents, Debbie Price and Lance (Valarie) Waldmeier; siblings, many friends and shipmates. Fair winds and following seas. Chief Petty Officer Roger Knight III, 76, of Pompton Plains, passed away peacefully Jan. 20, 2023. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey, to Roger and Elizabeth Knight. He graduated from Clifton High School. In 1964, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and, shortly thereafter, served in Vietnam aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Half Moon conducting inland riverine operations. After returning to New Jersey, he graduated from Montclair State University. He was called to active duty for homeland security operations during Operation Desert Storm and was instrumental in the evacuation of Lower Manhattan during the attacks of September 11, 2001. Roger spent over 33 years in the Coast Guard at Station Manasquan Inlet at Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, retiring in 2006. He worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Caven Point, retiring in 2016. Roger enjoyed his spare time attending his children’s sporting events, rooting for Army sports at West Point, and traveling to visit his children all over the world based on their own military graduations and assignments. He also spent a great deal of his time with his grandchildren. Roger is survived by Susan, his wife of 51 years, their daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Christopher, and five grandchildren. Chief Petty Officer David J. Greenway of Buffalo, New York, passed away Nov. 30, 2022. He was born Aug. 27, 1954, and he was the beloved husband of Kathleen (Szachta) Greenway for 44 years. David proudly served in the Marine Corps before beginning his dedicated 31-year career with the Buffalo Police Department. He was also chief petty officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, serving in Saudi Arabia in 1991 and Kuwait in 2004. In his retirement, he attended dance recitals baseball games and hockey games, as his wife and family had his heart. He is survived by his loving children, grandchildren, and his many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, shipmates and colleagues. Capt. Robert A. Stohlman, 65, passed away July 21, 2022, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born August 26, 1956, to the late Morris and Alcidie Stohlman in New Orleans, Louisiana. Robert was a member and past master of the Fairfax Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Culpeper Amateur Radio Association (call sign K4RCG). He served with the Coast Guard for 22 years until his retirement, earning the Legion of Merit along with many other medals of distinction. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Debra; daughter, Rebecca, and her husband, Thomas; grandchildren, Andrew and Emma; as well as a host of extended family and friends. Donald Patrick Fried, 77, of Yuma, Arizona, passed peacefully Oct. 18 after an extended illness. Born in Erie, Oct. 14, 1945, he was the son of the late Frederick and Mabel Fried. After high school, Don joined the Navy and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War before returning to northwestern Pennsylvania. He continued his military service in the Coast Guard Reserve and served on active duty during the Gulf War and elsewhere in the Middle East. he and his family lived for many years in Union City, where he operated an auto repair shop and drove school buses. He is survived by his sister and brothers, three children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and, special friend and companion, Dot Hart. Issue 1 • 2023 .
