Submission Guidelines Our contact email address is [email protected]. We will respond to emailed submissions within two weeks, depending upon where we are in the magazine cycle. Reservist is a quarterly publication. Submissions are accepted until six weeks before each issue’s publication date. Content received after cut-off may be applied to future issues. Since this magazine published primarily for current Coast Guard reservists, all of our material must be targeted accordingly. We welcome the chance to highlight your unit’s operations and high performers. Writers: We encourage writers who have a Coast Guard Reserve background to submit articles. We reserve the right to edit in order to meet space limitations or magazine format criteria; check with the editor first if your submission will fall outside the general guidelines below. Our articles are usually 500-1,500 words, accompanied by several photographs, illustrations or maps (where appropriate) with complete caption information. Take the space you need to tell your story, but if you go beyond 1,500 words, email the editor to discuss! Address the five Ws, but consider applying a SWOT analysis to your article to give it richness and detail. All articles must be accurate; writers must check dates and figures, as well as the spelling of names and places. Remember, our audience is highly varied, ranging from potential recruits and current reservists, to active duty personnel, retirees and family members of reservists—avoid confusing jargon. Our theme is Coast Guard Reserve—past, present, and future—and we include history, current events and forward-looking stories in each issue. Photographers: We feature photography from military and civilian photographers in both horizontal and vertical formats. While we appreciate group photos and awards, action shots will always be prioritized because they demonstrate the skills and talents of our Reserve force. Photos should be a minimum of 5” x 7” (300 dpi resolution) and saved in the .jpg or .jpeg format. Individual photos should be no larger than 8MB in saved size, and emails with multiple photos should be under 25MB. We cannot accept .zip files. Photos submitted for cover consideration should be shot vertically with space at the top for the magazine logo. Photos submitted for publication should also contain full cutline information with identifying names, ranks, unit, and action. Last thing, we don’t accept advertising or offer payment for submissions; we don’t publish book reviews, fiction or personal vignettes; and we rarely consider previously published work.
