He understands the challenges of recruiting qualified candidates. When he finds candidates, he pitches why they should choose the Coast Guard over other branches. Green said he’s gotten creative with his recruitment strategy, editing his personal Coast Guard promotional videos, creating his own recruiting website, and posting recruiting ads in every local law enforcement union magazine. Most recently, Green spearheaded one of the largest Coast Guard recruiting events in recent history, the U.S. Coast Guard Missions & Career Expo in Coronado, California. In July, he was interviewed in a live news broadcast to promote the expo, which took place in August. Using his unique methods, he recruited 16 reservists this year, who are all now serving. “Helping these members through the hiring process and being the person that sits down with them to sign their hiring package and watch them swear-in in front of their friends and family has been one of the most rewarding experiences,” said Green. “Getting to see them graduate from Cape May and getting calls from them on their first drill weekends to tell me how excited they are has been an amazing experience on its own.” For more information on recruiting, including information on the EIAR program, Recruiting Liaison Program and general resources, visit gocoastguard.com/max. Petty Officer 1st Class Cory Green from Recruiting Office San Diego, a reservist on active duty orders, is interviewed in a live news broadcast to promote the U.S. Coast Guard Missions & Career Expo. Avery Lowe, PSU 308 Earlier this summer, Port Security Unit 308 hosted a boat crew utility college for 38 students and instructors from the PSU community. From May 26 to June 9, members from six PSUs learned about the transportable port security boat, including PSUs 305, 307, 308, 309, 311, and 312. Working in small groups, students engaged in classroom instruction, focusing on plotting and navigation. Hands-on underway training concentrated on line handling, crew dynamics, and basic seamanship. At the conclusion of the college, this cross-section of the larger PSU community had a combined 222 hours underway, earned nearly 500 signatures, and spent time networking with new shipmates. PSU 308 holds Issue 3 • 2022 RESERVIST 9
