Orland Dean French, 99, of Adamstown, Md., passed away Jan. 9, 2021. “Frenchie" was born Sept. 24, 1921, on a farm near Douglas, Neb., and he enlisted in the Coast Guard in August 1940. He was promoted to chief petty officer in a record two years, nine months and six days. Upon completion of officer candidate program at the Coast Guard Academy in November 1943, he was promoted to ensign. He served at a variety of assignments afloat and ashore until retiring in 1966 as Chief of the Reserve Training Division in Washington, D.C. He was employed by the National Transportation Safety Board from 1966 until he retired again in 1983. Commander French was the husband of the late Vivian French, and he is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Everly, Sr., 89, of Callao, Va., passed away Jan. 12, 2021. Born in 1932, he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1953 and became a boatswain’s mate, transferring to the Coast Guard Reserve in 1957. There, he served his country at a variety of units for an additional 34 years, retiring as the officer-in-charge of Coast Guard Reserve Unit Station Still Pond, Md., in 1991. Not long after, Master Chief joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary, conducting patrols, doing vessel examinations, training new members and teaching boating safety and seamanship. He was known to show off his talents by tying knots with his hands behind his back. In 2016, he was named Division 3’s Auxiliarist of the Year, and he remained a member of the Auxiliary until 2018, a total of 65 years of service. As a civilian, he was a central part of the family business at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home as a funeral director and manager until he retired in 1994. He was an avid volunteer firefighter, trainer, and fundraiser for several fire companies in the area, and he also spent time on hobbies like hunting, fishing, farming, and horseback riding. Master Chief Everly is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean Wiley Everly, three children, 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and many friends.
