I was just thinking the other day, we’ve been together a long time, haven’t we? Decades at this point. But you probably didn’t remember it’s our anniversary, did you? I know—I was just as surprised as you, but this month marks 70 years since the inaugural issue of “The Coast Guard Reservist” was published. We don’t look a day over 25, do we? Flatterer. Well, what started as a monthly four-page newsletter has morphed into a 50-page quarterly magazine. What hasn’t changed is the purpose of the magazine itself, which—from Issue 1 in 1953—was “the dissemination of up-to-date information of interest to all Coast Guard reservists, on active and inactive duty.” (Interestingly, when I look through the pages of just the first few issues, I see so many familiar topics: training courses available, command information, retirement calculation, advancement requirements, and member accomplishments.) Putting this magazine together is truly enjoyable work. Showcasing the triumphs of the Reserve, both collectively and through the talents of its individuals, isn’t difficult. It’s like taking pictures of the bride at the wedding—the subject is so classy that the task is easy. This publication has weathered many changes in the service, has been helmed by many good people who shepherded it through the decades, but above all, it’s enjoyed a strong, loyal following through you, our readers. We continue to not only keep you informed about the operations and updates regarding our beloved service, but to honor the traditions and customs of our heritage and that long blue line of service members who left that legacy. I raise my coffee cup in a toast to you, and to us, as we celebrate our platinum anniversary. Cheers, shipmates. .
